In women

Finding the cause is half the treatment

In women, alopecia almost never shows up as receding temples or clear bald patches. What is typical is a diffuse loss of density on the top of the head, with a parting that keeps getting wider and the feeling that your ponytail has lost volume.

There may be several causes behind it, and they often overlap: female androgenetic alopecia (with a genetic predisposition and hormonal sensitivity), hormonal changes after childbirth, the menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid problems, low iron or other nutrients, restrictive diets, severe stress or certain medications.

That is why the consultation at Centro Ubud starts with a thorough medical history and an examination of the scalp with trichoscopy. If needed, the doctor requests targeted blood tests. With a clear diagnosis, we combine correcting the cause, medical treatment and in-clinic procedures.

Many women come to us after months of trying shampoos, ampoules or supplements without a diagnosis. Some can help as an add-on, but if the cause isn’t identified it is hard to get it right. Our aim is for you to understand what is happening to your hair, what you can expect and how long it takes to judge the result.

This treatment is for you if…

  • Your parting looks wider or your scalp more visible.
  • You are shedding more hair after a pregnancy, a diet or a stressful period.
  • Your hair has lost volume since the menopause.
  • You have tried shampoos and supplements with no result.

If we suspect a hormonal or other condition that needs investigating, we will guide you towards the appropriate specialist.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about female hair loss

What is the difference between telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia?
Effluvium is sudden, diffuse shedding that appears after a trigger and usually improves once the trigger is corrected. Androgenetic alopecia is slow, more noticeable on the top of the head, and the hair gradually becomes finer. They can coexist, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters.
Is it normal to lose a lot of hair after giving birth?
Yes, it is a common effluvium that appears a few months after childbirth and usually recovers. If the shedding goes on or the density doesn’t return, it is worth having it assessed in case there is another underlying cause.
Does the menopause cause hair loss?
The drop in oestrogen can make existing androgenetic alopecia more visible or encourage the hair to become finer. It can be treated, with the plan adapted to this stage of life.
Do I need blood tests?
In many cases, yes, especially if there is heavy shedding, irregular periods or symptoms of thyroid problems or anaemia. We tell you which values to check at the consultation.
Can I have treatment if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Some treatments are not suitable at these stages. The doctor will tell you which options are safe and which are best postponed.
When will I notice results?
Shedding usually decreases first, and then the hair gains thickness. We assess it from three to six months onwards with follow-up photos.
How much does female hair loss treatment cost?
It depends on the cause and the treatment recommended. At the free consultation we give you a fixed quote with no obligation.
