Facial hair is one of the most common reasons people ask about hair removal. In women it tends to concentrate on the upper lip, chin, sideburns and the area under the jaw; in men, between the eyebrows, on the upper cheeks to shape the beard, or on the neck, where it also helps prevent ingrown hairs from shaving.
The laser targets the melanin in the hair: the light is absorbed by the follicle, turns into heat and damages its ability to grow new hair. That is why it works best on dark hair and is not very effective on white, grey, very light blonde or red hair, and why several sessions are needed: only hairs in the growth phase at that moment can be treated.
The face has its own particularities. Facial hair is strongly influenced by hormones, and in some women increased hair on the chin or neck may be linked to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. In those cases the laser helps a great deal, but usually needs more sessions and maintenance, and a medical check-up of the cause is advisable. We explain all this during your consultation.

Questions about facial laser hair removal
How many sessions do I need for my upper lip or chin?
It depends on the thickness and colour of the hair and on any hormonal component. Several sessions are generally needed, and on a chin with hormonal hair it is common to need more, plus some maintenance. We give you an estimate during your consultation.
Is facial laser hair removal permanent?
It achieves a significant, long-lasting reduction in hair, but on the face, because of hormonal influence, new hairs may appear over time. That is why we talk about gradual reduction and maintenance.
Does it work on white, blonde or grey hair?
No. The laser needs the melanin in the hair to work, so white, grey or very light hair does not respond. During your consultation we check whether your hair can be treated.
Does it hurt?
Thanks to the cooling system, most people feel it as slight warmth or a small sting. The upper lip is a little more sensitive, but the sessions are very short.
Can laser make hair grow more?
In a small minority of cases, especially in areas with fine hair on the face or neck, a paradoxical effect that stimulates hair growth can occur. That is why we assess your hair type carefully before treating and adjust the settings.
Who cannot have it?
It is not performed on tanned or sunburnt skin, with infections or active cold sores, during pregnancy, or with certain photosensitising medications. If a hormonal cause is suspected, we recommend a medical check-up.
