Technique
How microneedles work on the scalp
Scalp microneedling involves making thousands of very fine, superficial micro-perforations in the scalp with a microneedling device such as Dermapen. The depth is adjusted to the area and the goal, and the skin recovers quickly. It is not an aggressive technique: the aim is to stimulate the skin, not damage it.
These controlled micro-injuries set the skin’s repair response in motion: growth factors are released, microcirculation improves and the follicle’s environment is stimulated. In addition, the micro-channels that open up help active ingredients applied in the same session to penetrate better.
That is why, at Centro Ubud, microneedling is almost always used in combination: with platelet-rich plasma, with mesotherapy ingredients or as part of a plan with a foundation medical treatment. It is carried out by a doctor, who decides whether it is suitable for you after assessing your type of hair loss and the condition of your scalp.
Microneedling is not a stand-alone technique for every type of hair loss. It works best for androgenetic alopecia and loss of density where follicles are still active. In scarring alopecia, alopecia areata patches or an inflamed scalp it may not be appropriate, which is why a prior assessment is essential.

What a scalp microneedling session involves
A simple medical procedure, carried out in the clinic.

Preparation
We clean and disinfect the scalp and, where appropriate, apply a topical anaesthetic for extra comfort.

Micro-perforation
The doctor treats the indicated areas with the microneedling device, adjusting the depth. The skin is left slightly red.

Applying active ingredients
We apply PRP or mesotherapy ingredients according to your plan and give you aftercare instructions for the following days. The whole session usually takes less than an hour.

Review

Questions about scalp microneedling
What is the difference between microneedling and hair mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy delivers active ingredients through micro-injections. Microneedling creates micro-perforations that stimulate the skin in their own right and help active ingredients penetrate. They complement each other and are often done in the same session.
Does scalp microneedling hurt?
You will feel a tingling or scratching sensation. With a topical anaesthetic, most people tolerate it very well.
How many sessions do I need?
There is usually an initial series of several sessions a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance. We adjust it according to how you respond.
What aftercare is needed?
Mild redness for a few hours is normal. We recommend not washing your hair until the next day and avoiding direct sun, swimming pools, saunas, hair dye and intense exercise for one or two days.
Can I use a dermaroller at home instead of coming to the clinic?
Home devices work at a much shallower depth and, if used incorrectly or not sterilised, can irritate or infect the skin. In the clinic the procedure is sterile, controlled and combined with medical-grade active ingredients.
Who shouldn’t have scalp microneedling?
It is not suitable with active infection or inflammation of the scalp, a tendency to keloid scars, some clotting disorders or anticoagulant treatment, nor during pregnancy depending on the ingredient combined with it. We review this at the consultation.
How much does scalp microneedling cost?
