What percutaneous neuromodulation is

Percutaneous neuromodulation involves placing a very fine needle, which acts as an electrode, close to a peripheral nerve, located using ultrasound. A controlled electrical stimulus is applied through it, felt as tingling or as rhythmic contractions of the muscles supplied by that nerve.

The aim is to influence how the nervous system processes pain and how it activates muscles. It is used for peripheral neuropathic pain, nerve entrapments, persistent musculoskeletal pain and situations where a muscle doesn’t activate properly after an injury or surgery, for example the quadriceps after a knee injury.

It is a promising technique with a growing body of research, but it is not a stand-alone treatment and it doesn’t work the same way for everyone. That is why we recommend it after a careful assessment and always within a plan that includes therapeutic exercise and pain education.

At Centro Ubud it is performed by physiotherapists trained in invasive physiotherapy, always under ultrasound guidance, with sterile single-use equipment.

Before suggesting it, we review your medical history, the medication you take and the characteristics of your pain, because not all pain that seems nerve-related actually is. After each session we reassess the effect on pain and function: if the technique isn’t delivering what we expected after a few applications, we rethink it rather than repeating it out of habit.

This treatment is for you if…

  • You have pain with nerve-like features: burning, cramping or tingling.
  • You’ve been diagnosed with a peripheral nerve entrapment.
  • You have persistent pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments.
  • You find it hard to activate a muscle after an injury or an operation.

It is not suitable if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, during pregnancy in sensitive areas, with infection or a skin lesion in the area, or if you have a severe fear of needles. If you take anticoagulants, we will assess your case. Progressive loss of strength needs a medical assessment.

What a session involves

Precision, safety and always part of an active plan.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound localisation

We identify the nerve and nearby structures before inserting the needle.

Technique

Controlled stimulation

We adjust the intensity and settings so the sensation is tolerable.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about percutaneous neuromodulation

Does percutaneous neuromodulation hurt?
The needle insertion is brief and usually well tolerated. During stimulation you will feel tingling or muscle contractions, which we adjust to what feels comfortable for you.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the condition and how you respond. It is usually applied over a limited number of sessions, reassessing the effect to decide whether to continue.
How is it different from dry needling?
Dry needling acts on muscle trigger points without current; neuromodulation applies electrical stimulation close to a nerve to influence pain and muscle activation.
Does it have side effects?
There may be some local discomfort, a small bruise or tiredness in the area for a few hours. Significant complications are uncommon when it is performed under ultrasound guidance.
Does it work in every case?
No. It is a useful technique in selected cases and the response varies between people. That is why we recommend it after an assessment, combine it with exercise and education, and review its effect at each session to decide whether to continue.
Is it the same as electrical stimulation with pads?
No. With pads the current is applied to the skin; in percutaneous neuromodulation the stimulus reaches the nerve precisely through an ultrasound-guided needle.
How much does percutaneous neuromodulation cost in Torremolinos?
It depends on your case and the treatment plan recommended. At the free consultation we give you a fixed quote with no obligation.
