Ultrasound-guided assessment

What ultrasound is used for in physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of soft tissues. It emits no radiation, is non-invasive and, above all, is dynamic: we can watch a tendon or nerve while you move the joint, compare it with the healthy side and relate what we see to what you feel.

In physiotherapy we use it as one more tool in the assessment: it complements the interview and physical examination, helps us shape the physiotherapy diagnosis and decide which techniques make sense in your case. It also lets us track how an injury is progressing during treatment.

Its second major use is guiding invasive techniques. With ultrasound we see the needle in real time during dry needling, percutaneous electrolysis or neuromodulation, which brings precision in reaching the target tissue and safety in avoiding structures such as blood vessels or nerves.

It is important to know its limits: ultrasound can’t see inside bone or deep structures in some joints, and many findings also appear in people with no pain. That is why we always interpret the image alongside your symptoms. It does not replace medical imaging when that is indicated, and if we see something that needs investigating, we refer you to your doctor.

For you, the benefit is practical: you leave the assessment with a better understanding of what is going on, why we suggest some techniques and not others, and with a reference point to check later whether the tissue and, above all, your function have improved. Ultrasound doesn’t decide on its own: it is one piece of clinical reasoning that we always explain to you.

This treatment is for you if…

  • You have pain in a tendon, muscle or ligament and want to know which structure is involved.
  • You’re about to have invasive physiotherapy and want precision and safety.
  • You want to track the progress of a sports injury.
  • You have symptoms of a peripheral nerve entrapment.

Ultrasound in physiotherapy is part of the functional assessment and is not a radiology report. If you have severe night pain, growing lumps, fever or significant trauma, we will direct you to a medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about musculoskeletal ultrasound

Does ultrasound hurt?
No. A gel is applied and a probe is glided over the skin. At most you will feel some pressure over a sensitive area. It has no side effects or restrictions afterwards either: you can carry on with your normal activities.
What is the difference between an ultrasound and an MRI?
Ultrasound is dynamic, quick and radiation-free, ideal for superficial tissues such as tendons or ligaments. MRI is better for deep structures, bone and the inside of joints, and is requested by a doctor.
Does the ultrasound replace the test my doctor requested?
No. Ultrasound in physiotherapy guides the assessment and treatment, but it does not replace medical diagnostic tests.
Do I need to prepare?
No special preparation is needed. It is best to wear clothing that allows access to the area being assessed.
How long does it take?
It is built into the assessment or treatment session and usually takes a few minutes, depending on the area and what we need to check.
Why is ultrasound-guided needling better?
Because it lets us see the needle and nearby structures in real time, which improves the precision and safety of the technique.
How much does musculoskeletal ultrasound cost in Torremolinos?
It depends on your case and the treatment plan recommended. At the free consultation we give you a fixed quote with no obligation.
