The skin of the lips is very thin, has no sebaceous glands and is constantly exposed to sun, wind and air conditioning. With age it also loses its own hyaluronic acid. That is why lips often look dry, crack easily, lose their shine and develop small vertical lines.
Lip hydration involves applying a very light hyaluronic acid, with little or no cross-linking, spread in small points across the lip. This type of product attracts and holds water, improves texture and restores a plump look, but it is not designed to add volume or change shape.
It is the treatment we usually suggest to people who want better-cared-for lips without anyone noticing a change in size, to younger people with dry lips and to those who already have a volume they like but have lost skin quality. What lip hydration involves
A simple, quick procedure, using a different product from the one used for volume and always performed by a doctor at our clinic in Torremolinos.
Product
Light hyaluronic acid
A fluid, low-density hyaluronic acid is used, which integrates into the tissue to hydrate it. It does not create lumps or change the outline.
Session
Micro-injections with topical anaesthetic
The application takes a few minutes and is quite comfortable, because the product is very fluid and spreads easily. There may be mild swelling and the odd red dot for one or two days. On the day itself it is best to avoid lip make-up, intense heat and strenuous exercise.
Plan
One or more sessions
Depending on the condition of your lips, one session may be enough or two or three a few weeks apart may be recommended, with regular maintenance. We review progress to adjust the plan to how your skin responds, as not all lips absorb the product in the same way or have the same needs.

Questions about lip hydration
What is the difference between lip hydration and lip augmentation?
Different products are used. For hydration the hyaluronic acid is very fluid and its job is to hold water and improve texture; for augmentation it is denser and designed to add volume and shape.
Will my lips look bigger?
Not noticeably. There may be slight swelling for the first few days, but the aim is for the lip to look more hydrated, not fuller.
How many sessions do I need?
It depends on how dry your lips are. Sometimes one session is enough and sometimes two or three are recommended. We give you a guideline plan at your consultation.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Yes. It is often done together with subtle contouring of the lip border, with a facial skinbooster or before a lip augmentation to improve tissue quality. The doctor will tell you the most suitable order and timing.
How long does the effect last?
Light hyaluronic acid is reabsorbed sooner than the kind used for volume, so the effect usually lasts a few months and maintenance is advisable. It varies from person to person.
Does it hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied before starting and very fine needles are used. Most people feel it as small, tolerable pricks.
When is it not recommended?
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, or with an active cold sore, wounds or infection in the area. If you get recurrent cold sores, let us know so we can consider a preventive plan.
