What is lip contouring?
The edge of the lip, the line that separates the red part from the skin, becomes blurred over the years. The Cupid’s bow flattens, the philtral columns (the two ridges running down from the nose) lose definition and the corners of the mouth tend to droop. The result is a less defined mouth, even if the volume stays the same.
Lip contouring involves applying small amounts of hyaluronic acid right along that border to redefine it. Unlike lip augmentation, the aim here is not to add volume but to better outline the shape you already have: a cleaner border, a more defined bow and a more symmetrical mouth.
At Centro Ubud it is performed by a doctor, who first studies the proportion between your upper and lower lip, their relationship with your nose and chin and how your mouth moves when you talk and smile. With that information they decide where and how much product to apply, always aiming for a result that looks like you. If at the consultation we see that contouring is not what suits you best, we will tell you clearly.

We use a resorbable hyaluronic acid designed for contouring, applied in micro-amounts with a fine needle or micro-cannula depending on the area.

Around 30 minutes
We apply topical anaesthetic before starting. Afterwards there may be swelling and a small bruise, which usually disappear within a few days.
Review
Check-up at two weeks
We review the result once the swelling has gone down. If a small adjustment is needed to balance things out, we assess it then.

Questions about lip contouring
What is the difference between lip contouring and lip augmentation?
Contouring works on the lip border to define its shape, using very little product. Augmentation adds volume to the body of the lip. They can be combined, but they are different goals, and at your consultation we explain which fits what you want.
Does contouring make lips look bigger?
They may look slightly more defined, because a crisp border catches more light, but the size barely changes. It is the right treatment if you want to improve the shape without an obvious change in volume.
How long does lip contouring last?
Hyaluronic acid is naturally reabsorbed and in the lips it usually lasts several months, although it depends on the person, the product and factors such as metabolism or smoking. We tell you when it is worth coming back for a check.
Does it hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand and many products contain a built-in anaesthetic, so most patients describe it as brief, tolerable discomfort.
What aftercare is needed?
Avoid lip make-up, intense heat, saunas and strenuous exercise for the first 24-48 hours, and don’t massage the area unless the doctor tells you to. There may be swelling for the first few days.
Who should not have lip contouring?
It is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active cold sore or an infection in the area. If you get recurrent cold sores, have autoimmune conditions or take anticoagulants, mention it at your consultation.
