An invasive physiotherapy technique that applies a low-intensity electrical current next to the nerve, guided by ultrasound, to help modulate pain and improve function when the nervous system is involved.

Percutaneous neuromodulation involves placing a very fine needle, which acts as an electrode, close to a peripheral nerve, located using ultrasound. A controlled electrical stimulus is applied through it, felt as tingling or as rhythmic contractions of the muscles supplied by that nerve.
The aim is to influence how the nervous system processes pain and how it activates muscles. It is used for peripheral neuropathic pain, nerve entrapments, persistent musculoskeletal pain and situations where a muscle doesn’t activate properly after an injury or surgery, for example the quadriceps after a knee injury.
It is a promising technique with a growing body of research, but it is not a stand-alone treatment and it doesn’t work the same way for everyone. That is why we recommend it after a careful assessment and always within a plan that includes therapeutic exercise and pain education.
At Centro Ubud it is performed by physiotherapists trained in invasive physiotherapy, always under ultrasound guidance, with sterile single-use equipment.
Before suggesting it, we review your medical history, the medication you take and the characteristics of your pain, because not all pain that seems nerve-related actually is. After each session we reassess the effect on pain and function: if the technique isn’t delivering what we expected after a few applications, we rethink it rather than repeating it out of habit.
It is not suitable if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, during pregnancy in sensitive areas, with infection or a skin lesion in the area, or if you have a severe fear of needles. If you take anticoagulants, we will assess your case. Progressive loss of strength needs a medical assessment.

Nerves irritated along their path through the arm, leg or foot.

Neuropathic forefoot pain with burning and tingling in the toes.

Helps restore activation of inhibited muscles after injury or surgery.
We examine the nerve and its path, assess it with ultrasound and check there are no contraindications.
We explain the technique, what you will feel and how it fits in with the rest of your treatment.
We perform ultrasound-guided neuromodulation and combine it with therapeutic exercise.
Precision, safety and always part of an active plan.
We identify the nerve and nearby structures before inserting the needle.
We adjust the intensity and settings so the sensation is tolerable.
Single-use needles and aseptic protocols for every application.
After the technique we make the most of the window of reduced pain to work on movement.
See therapeutic exerciseTell us what you would like to improve and we will explain, with no obligation, which treatment suits you.
