Hair loss at the crown in Torremolinos

The crown is the area we see least and the one that gives away loss of density in photos first. The good news: if treated in time, it is one of the areas that responds best to medical treatment.

Crown

Thinning that is usually spotted late

The crown, or vertex, is the top and back of the head. Because we can’t see it in the mirror, hair loss in this area is usually discovered through a photo taken from above, a comment from the hairdresser or light reflecting off the scalp.

In most cases, thinning at the crown is caused by androgenetic alopecia: the follicles miniaturise and the hair grows finer and finer until the skin shows through. In men it usually starts as a circle that gradually widens; in women it looks more like a loss of density on the top of the head and along the parting.

Not everything is alopecia: many people have a cowlick that parts the hair and makes it look sparser. With trichoscopy we check whether there is genuine miniaturisation and, if so, what stage it is at. From there, the doctor proposes a treatment and a review schedule with standardised photographs to track progress.

One advantage of this area is that it usually responds better to medical treatment than the front hairline, especially in the early stages. So if you have noticed your crown thinning, it is best not to wait until a clear bald patch appears: the more miniaturised hair the follicle still holds, the more scope there is to regain thickness and density.

This treatment is for you if…

  • You’ve been told your scalp shows at the crown, or you’ve noticed it in photos.
  • The hair on top is finer than at the sides.
  • Direct light lets you see the scalp at the crown.
  • You want to know whether it’s a cowlick or the start of alopecia.

If the loss is in round patches of smooth skin or appears suddenly, it may be a different type of alopecia: we assess it and, if appropriate, refer you on.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about hair loss at the crown

Why does hair fall out at the crown?
The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia, because the follicles in that area are sensitive to androgens. Less often, other causes such as telogen effluvium or alopecia areata play a part; these can be told apart during the examination.
How do I know if it’s a cowlick or a bald spot?
With a cowlick the hair is of normal thickness and simply changes direction. If there is miniaturisation, trichoscopy shows hairs of different thicknesses. It is one of the first things we check.
Does hair at the crown grow back?
If the follicle is still alive, treatment can restore thickness and density. Where there are no follicles left, it can’t. That is why the crown responds much better when treated in the early stages.
How long does it take to see an improvement?
First the shedding slows, then the hair gains thickness. We assess it from three to six months onwards by comparing photos always taken the same way.
How many sessions are needed?
There is usually an initial phase of several spaced-out sessions followed by maintenance. We adjust the pace according to how you respond.
Do products that conceal the crown help?
Hair fibres or scalp make-up hide the thinning, but they don’t treat the cause. You can keep using them during medical treatment if they make you feel more comfortable.
How much does treating the crown cost?
It depends on your case and the treatment recommended. At the free consultation we give you a fixed quote with no obligation.
