Why do bags appear under the eyes?
Under the eye there are small fat pads that protect the eyeball, held in place by a membrane called the septum. With age, that membrane and the skin lose firmness and the fat shifts forward, forming a bag that stays all day. This is known as a fat bag, and it has a strong genetic component: some people have it from a young age.
At other times the puffiness is due to fluid retention. This is the bag that appears in the morning and improves through the day, and gets worse with salt, alcohol, lack of sleep, allergies or hormonal changes. In some cases there is also laxity of the eyelid skin or volume loss in the cheek that makes the bag stand out more.
Telling them apart comes first, because the treatment changes completely. Without surgery we can improve fluid retention, the quality and firmness of the skin and the transition between eyelid and cheek, which disguises a mild bag. But a large fat bag cannot be removed with injections: in that case the gold-standard treatment is blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery.

Questions about under-eye bags
Can under-eye bags be removed without surgery?
It depends on the type. Puffiness from fluid retention and mild bags can improve considerably without surgery. A large fat bag cannot be removed with injections: for that the effective option is blepharoplasty.
What is the difference between bags and dark circles?
A dark circle is a shadow or colour change under the eye, sometimes due to hollowing. A bag is a bulge, caused by fat or fluid. They often occur together, which is why they need to be assessed together.
Does hyaluronic acid get rid of bags?
It doesn’t remove them. In very specific cases it can disguise a mild bag by softening the hollow beneath it, but if there is fluid retention it can make it worse. That is why the doctor decides after the assessment.
How many sessions do I need?
Skin-quality treatments such as INDIBA or regenerative treatments are given in sessions. The number depends on your case and we tell you at your consultation.
Why are my eyes puffy in the morning?
