Frontotemporal recession
We measure how far the hairline has moved back at the temples and how it progresses between reviews.
A hairline that moves back slightly with age can be normal; one that keeps receding year after year is not. We help you tell the difference and slow the retreat of your front hairline.

In late adolescence, many men’s hairline moves up slightly and the temples become a little more defined. This is known as a mature hairline and, on its own, it is not a sign of alopecia. What is a warning sign is temples that keep receding, hair in that area becoming finer and shorter, or density being lost behind the hairline.
In most cases, a progressively receding hairline is caused by androgenetic alopecia. The follicles in the frontotemporal area are particularly sensitive to androgens and miniaturise earlier than those in other areas, which is why it is usually the first place you notice it.
Receding temples can also occur in women. In their case, causes such as traction from tight hairstyles or frontal fibrosing alopecia, a scarring alopecia that needs dermatological assessment, have to be ruled out. At the consultation we examine the area with trichoscopy, and measure and photograph the hairline so we can compare it at each review.
As with all androgen-related hair loss, time is not on your side: a miniaturised follicle can still respond, but one that has disappeared cannot. So if you have noticed your hairline changing over the last year or two, it is worth having it assessed rather than waiting until the recession is obvious to others.
If we see signs of scarring alopecia (shiny skin, loss of eyebrows or inflammation around the follicle), we will refer you to dermatology.

We measure how far the hairline has moved back at the temples and how it progresses between reviews.

Trichoscopy shows us whether thick and fine hairs are growing side by side, a sign that the follicle is weakening but still active.
