What good rehabilitation looks like

Rehabilitating means giving a joint, tendon or muscle back the ability to do what you need, from walking without pain to getting back to competing. We see people recovering from a knee or hip replacement, an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus surgery, a fracture, shoulder surgery or foot surgery, such as bunion surgery.

Each process is organised in phases. First, protection and control of pain and inflammation, respecting the surgeon’s instructions. Then, regaining mobility and activating the muscles. Later, strengthening with progressive loads. Finally, functional or sport-specific return to activity: specific movements, jumping, changes of direction or going back to your job. Timescales depend on the surgery and on each person, which is why we do not give fixed dates without getting to know you.

We do not progress by the calendar but by criteria: range of motion, strength compared with the healthy side, movement control, swelling and tolerance to load. With those tests we decide when to increase the demands and when you are ready to be discharged. Many relapses happen from going back too soon, which is why the final part of the return to activity is so important.

We work in coordination with your orthopaedic surgeon: we follow their protocol, let them know how you are progressing and consult them when a doubt arises. Musculoskeletal ultrasound helps us observe tendons and muscles and guide some treatments.

We also support basic neuromuscular rehabilitation and exercise programmes after hospital stays or illnesses that have caused loss of strength. If we notice warning signs (swelling and pain in the calf, fever, a wound that looks bad, disproportionate pain), we refer you immediately to your doctor.

This treatment is for you if…

  • You have had, or are about to have, an operation.
  • You have suffered a fracture or a tear.
  • You want to return to sport safely.
  • You feel you are not regaining strength or mobility.

Painful swelling in a calf, fever, a red or discharging wound and disproportionate pain require urgent medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about rehabilitation

When do I start rehabilitation after an operation?
It depends on the surgery and your surgeon’s protocol. It usually starts early, sometimes in the first few days; always confirm the instructions from your orthopaedic surgeon.
How long does rehabilitation last?
It varies greatly: from a few weeks for a mild injury to several months after ligament surgery or a joint replacement. We give you an estimate after assessing you.
What is the difference between rehabilitation and return to activity?
Rehabilitation restores basic function; return to activity goes further and prepares you for the demands of your sport or job.
Do I need a medical report?
It is very helpful if you bring reports, imaging and the surgical protocol. If you do not have them, we start with the assessment and guide you.
Can it be done at home?
In some cases yes, especially in the early post-operative period. Take a look at our home physiotherapy option.
How do I know I am ready to return to sport?
When your strength, mobility and control are similar to the healthy side, you tolerate load without pain the next day and you pass tests specific to the movement.
How much does rehabilitation cost in Torremolinos?
It depends on your process and the planned sessions. At the free consultation we give you a fixed, no-obligation quote.
