Why do barcode lines appear?
Barcode lines are the fine vertical lines that form on the skin of the upper lip, and sometimes the lower lip too. When you wear lipstick it can bleed into them, and over time they show even when your mouth is at rest.
Several factors play a part at once: repeated movement of the muscle around the mouth (pursing your lips, drinking through a straw or smoking), accumulated sun damage, loss of collagen and fat in the area and, for many women, the hormonal decline of menopause. That is why they are not exclusive to smokers, although smoking clearly speeds them up.
As there are several causes, a single technique is rarely enough. Questions about barcode lines
Can barcode lines be removed completely?
Fine lines usually improve a lot; very deep or long-standing ones soften, but it is difficult for them to disappear completely. At your consultation we tell you what improvement is realistic in your case.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the depth. Filler is usually done in one session with a follow-up check, and skin-quality techniques need several sessions a few weeks apart.
Is it the same as lip augmentation?
No. Augmentation adds volume to the lip; here we treat the skin above it. Although a little support at the lip border can help, the aim is not to change its size.
Does it hurt?
Topical anaesthetic and very fine needles are used. It is a sensitive area, but most patients tolerate it well.
How long does the result last?
Hyaluronic acid is reabsorbed over time and the effect of neuromodulators is temporary, so maintenance is recommended. The skin improvement achieved with biostimulation lasts longer if you look after the area.
Will I have marks or swelling afterwards?
There may be slight swelling, redness or a small bruise for a few days. If combined with Dermapen or a peel, the skin may be somewhat red and flake slightly. In general you can carry on as normal by following a few simple guidelines.
Who should not have this treatment?
It is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active cold sore, infection or wounds in the area. If you get recurrent cold sores or take anticoagulants, mention it at your consultation.
