Dry needling in Torremolinos

What dry needling is and when it makes sense

Dry needling is an invasive physiotherapy technique in which a fine needle is inserted, without injecting any drug (hence “dry”), into a myofascial trigger point. A trigger point is a sensitive spot within a tight muscle that hurts when pressed and can reproduce referred pain elsewhere, such as a headache that starts in the trapezius or buttock pain that travels down the leg.

Needling the trigger point usually produces a local twitch response, a small involuntary contraction, after which the muscle tends to relax and the pain to ease. Today its effect is understood more as pain modulation than as “undoing a knot”.

Dry needling can help with myofascial pain in the neck, back, shoulder, buttock or leg, but it is not a stand-alone treatment: its aim is to open a window of less pain so you can make progress with therapeutic exercise and correct whatever overloaded the muscle.

At Centro Ubud it is performed by physiotherapists trained in invasive physiotherapy, with sterile single-use material and, in higher-risk areas such as the chest or near nerves and blood vessels, under ultrasound guidance, which increases precision and safety.

Before needling, we examine the muscle and confirm that the pain has a myofascial component. If your pain mainly comes from a tendon, a joint or a nerve, other techniques will be more appropriate, and we will tell you so clearly.

This treatment is for you if…

  • You have muscle tightness or “knots” that keep coming back.
  • You have neck, back or shoulder pain with areas that are very tender to the touch.
  • You get headaches linked to tension in your neck and shoulders.
  • Massage only relieves you for a few hours.

We do not perform dry needling if you have an intense fear of needles, an infection or skin lesion in the area, lymphoedema in that limb or severe clotting disorders; if you take anticoagulants, we assess it. Muscle pain with fever, generalised weakness or no mechanical cause needs a medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about dry needling

Does dry needling hurt?
You barely feel the needle going in. The local twitch response can cause a brief prick or cramp. Afterwards it is common to feel muscle soreness in the area for one or two days.
What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
They use similar needles but have different foundations. Dry needling is based on anatomy and examination of the muscle to treat myofascial trigger points.
How many dry needling sessions will I need?
It depends on the case. It is often applied over a few sessions, combined with exercise. If there is no response, we rethink the treatment.
What are the risks?
The most common are muscle soreness or a small bruise. Some people feel dizzy. Serious complications are rare, and ultrasound guidance helps reduce them in higher-risk areas.
Can I do sport afterwards?
You can usually do light activity the same day, and moving actually helps the soreness pass sooner. If you are going to train hard or compete, we recommend waiting until it has gone.
Is it the same as invasive physiotherapy?
Dry needling is one of the invasive physiotherapy techniques, along with percutaneous electrolysis and neuromodulation.
How much does dry needling cost in Torremolinos?
It depends on your case and the recommended treatment plan. At the free consultation we give you a fixed quote with no obligation.
